I made it!

When I started this “crazy” Jane thing back on August first, my goal was to have all the 5” blocks, pieced (or appliqued), quilted and bound before the end of the year. I finished my last binding on New Year’s Eve – 5 months start to finish. Whoop Whoop!

Jane in a Box

I spent the weekend choosing fabrics for the border triangles. I have chosen fabrics as close to the original as I could in the center blocks and for the triangle border pieces. However, I am (at least I think I am) going to do something different with the pieced triangle. I found it very hard to hand quilt some of the blocks with tiny pieces and as I studied the pieced border blocks, I just couldn't imagine hand quilting all those little pieces so I am… no I will wait and surprise you all (I know you are waiting on tender hooks) as soon as I get a few completed. It will of course make the border go faster as well. Wish me luck!

  1. Questions. The DJ blocks finish at 4 1/2" but you mention yours finish at 5". Did you enlarge the block designs or is it the potholder process that added the extra half inch? And you show a backing that matches the print fabric on the front. Are you adding a separate binding of the solid to each block? I would think in the potholder method, the backing was brought over the front. Just trying to understand as I am considering the method.

    1. Karen, Good question. It is one I address when I am teaching this method and I forgot to make it clear in my post. Because each block is separately bound (and yes you could bring the back around to the front, but I prefer the look of a separate binding) the 1/4" binding is in actuality the 1/4" seam allowance all around the block. When you are doing an applique block it is easy to figure what size you want your finished block - including binding - but a in a pieced block you have to draft accordingly. Hope that makes sense. I will try to post it with a photo or two.

  2. Whoop! Whoop! is right! YAY and congratulations, too! :) And though your 'Jane in the Box' looks wonderful now that it is all completed blocks, I CAN NOT WAIT to see it out of the box and coming together with the border pieces!!

    1. Thanks Debra, I am looking forward to a "finish" too since I have the next one patiently waiting for my rotary cutter! I must say though, that they are fun to play with in this stage. Maybe I should re-think putting them together??

  3. Congratulations on the Finish! Look forward to seeing them on Thur! Don't forget to bring them.....will show you the two I have finished! LOL
Is not the size difference in your blocks due to the fact that the binding will replace the sashing between the blocks?
