Hospital Sketches block #1

As soon as Barbara Brackman announced her “Hospital Sketches” sew-a-long, I knew I’d have to join in. After all, she promised it was “all applique” how could I refuse? I was having trouble deciding on a background. Then, one day a few weeks ago when I was “busted” by a friend in the fabric section of a local discount store. I had absolutely no business buying so much as a fat quarter when my shelves are so full that the house groans whenever walk into the room!
But Sue happened to have in her cart the most luscious shade of green! So….
I can’t seem to capture the true color with my iPad. Taking it out into the snow helps, but it is really a lovely shade of yellow/green.
Since this was a symmetrical design, I using the backbasting method. As you can see, I don't always hit the mark, but I can live with "close enough"!
Anyway, it feels good to have block #1, ("Periwinkle Wreath") done! Check out all the fabulous blocks on the Facebook page (here)

Update: Barbara did some photoshop magic and this is much closer to the true color.

  2. Since it is all applique I ran in the opposite direction. :)
Your work is so meticulous and beautiful. The background color is very unique and that is what makes it wonderful!

  6. Your block is beautiful! It was a fun one to stitch - I couldn't put mine down! Now that I study yours more closely we've used 3 of the same greens :0) Your back basting looks very accurate to me!

  9. Your stitching and color/fabric choices are exquisite, Wendy. I love the scrappiness of the block with the variety of fabrics, yet you maintained the colors so well. I keep going back and forth about whether to participate in this sew-along or not, but I printed the pattern yesterday. If I'm going to do it I have to decide soon or be way behind (again)!

  10. Tell us how you manage to accomplish so much! Love the colors you've chosen for this block. I've never tried back basting applique. Can't quite grasp the concept, lol!

  11. Well done! Your color choices are saying Spring is on the way... Your back basting looks terrific - it is the only way I can do applique. (Must confess...that first pattern is secured to my light table and I have a background picked out...haven’t gotten very far have I?)

  13. That is beautiful. It is almost luminous! It looks as if it would cheer me up on a dark grey and damp day!

  14. Don't you hate those fabrics that won't show their awesomeness on the blog posts! I can tell that it's a great fabric and would have been impossible to leave behind.:)

  15. Fantastic color choices! I knew I wanted my Hospital Sketches to be traditional-looking, but the thought of doing the same blocks in bright, modern colors is so appealing! I'll be living vicariously watching your blocks unfold!

  16. Oh, your block turned out so nice. I really like all your fabric choices. It is just so lovely. I know that I’m going to regret not participating in this SAL. Just too many projects to finish.

  17. I'm keen to start this series too...and more so, seeing your lovely version. I need to get away from using the same old cream (etc) background fabrics!

  18. I might have caught you shopping for fabric had I been there but I wouldn't have ratted on you. I shop for fabric plenty of times when I have lots at home to choose from already. Just never seems quite the right piece when I am in one of those moods.
