Tree blocks for fire victims

Just last year many of us sent quilts and supplies to victims of the California fires. Thanks to Barb (Fun with Barb) I found out where I could send “tree” blocks to help out the victims of the Australian bush fires.

I hand appliqued this simple tree.
These 2 blocks were pieced willy nilly with no template or measurement just whack and stitch, then I added borders to bring them to 12 ½”. They went together very quickly. I thought the Di Ford fabrics would be appropriate (not to mention beautiful!).

As I was working on these blocks, I thought about what it would be like to lose everything in a fire. My father was the baby of a large family in rural Maine. He rarely talked about tough times, but I remember one story that broke my heart. When he was very young (5 or 6) they had a house fire and they had to move. Dad had a pet pig named Inkwink. They could not move all of the livestock to the new house so Inkwink came home by way of the slaughterhouse. Of course when telling the story, my Dad in his own comic way painted a picture of 9 children sitting around the dinner table refusing to eat my Dad's pet pig! So, although I cannot imagine the thought of losing everything, I feel their pain and I wish I could do more to help.

Click (here) to find out how you can help. Thanks Barb for letting us know!

  1. These tree blocks are so sweet. I really like the applique one. It is really sad and I can't imagine the pain of losing a home or a pet. I think it would be doubly hard to have a pet for dinner.

  2. Your tree blocks are great. Thanks for sharing the info.
I love the story that your father told. Amazing that he came from such a large family. I find it especially special that you remembered the story he told you from when you were 5 or 6. That reinforces my belief that our grandkids may remember many things as they grow up that we can't imagine!

I love your story of inkwink but sad to hear about the fire. I can't imagine losing everything. My heart breaks too for all the animals.

  4. What a thoughtful thing to do, Wendy. I wonder who puts the blocks together and what the final quilts will look like. They will be very special indeed.

Remember when Audrey's town burned (Pateros, WA) her mom lost everything and we sent her fabric?

We had a house fire when I was young- so scary!!
We had a "pet" duck once that my dad wanted to eat. I don't remember any of us kids partaking!!

  6. Beautiful tree blocks and a worthy cause. My sister and her family arrived home from their Christmas holiday visit to the grandparents to find the fire department mopping up from a fire at their home. In their case it was arson; the house was saved and renovated but they were happy to move out of that city not too long afterward.

  10. I feel very happy to share my great and wonderful testimony with everyone on this site..: I was married for 4 years to my husband and all of a sudden another woman came into the picture he started hating me and he was abusive.but i still loved him with all my heart and wanted him at all cost.... He filed for divorce and my whole life was turning apart and i didn't know what to do, he moved out of the house and abandoned me and the kids... my very close friend told me about trying spiritual means to get my husband back and introduced me to a spell caster so i decided to try it. although i didn't believe in all those things then when he did the special prayers and spell, after 2 days, my husband came back and was pleading that he had realized his mistakes I just couldn't believe it, anyway we are back together now and we are happy in case anyone needs help here is his email address; Account
