FREE Quilt

8 ½” x 11 ½”

Now that I have your attention, I am offering a giveaway to go along with my burning question. If you make it to the end of this long winded post, leave me a comment and one of you will receive this little quilt as a parting gift.

Actually, it is a two part question – 1) are you on Facebook (or other social media) and 2) If you are, what is the percentage of your time spent on other social media vs Blogging?

I ask this question because, I feel like a 19th century woman hopelessly trapped in the 21st century. In 1994 we bought our first computer. It was really for the children to use as an educational resource. I swore that I was NEVER going to use it and I kept my promise for quite while. Even after the 4th or 5th computer I found I was still only using it for e-mail.

Then my friend Cyndi (Busy Thimble) said she had started a Blog. What???? My friend, my cohort, my inspiration for so many of my reproduction quilts was heading over to the dark side! How could I let her get trapped in this world all by herself? I spent the next few years “lurking” around Blogland until I started my own in September of 2014.

It has been a wonderful experience. I have “chatted” with so many wonderful quilters and have even had the privilege of meeting a few of you face to face. I enjoy the slower pace of a Blog and I do not plan to give it up any time soon.

I have however noticed that a lot of people are moving to the faster paced and perhaps easier to post venues. I am on Facebook, in fact I have two accounts. Both were set up by other (well meaning) people and I can’t figure out how to get the older one down (see what I mean?).

My dilemma is how to best utilize my time. I am not willing to ignore my Blog buddies only to scroll through Facebook for hours on end (it takes me hours because just when I see something I like, whoosh, it’s gone and I spend way too long looking for it again – see what I mean????).

So, I thought if I had input from all of you as to how you spend your Internet time it might help me in my quest to organize mine!

Thanks for working your way down to this point. I’ve kept you so long I promise I will add a few surprises to keep the little quilt company in the package.

I will use my random generator (grandson picks the number) and announce a winner on Thursday May 25. If you are a “no reply” Blogger, please make sure to leave me your e-mail address so that I can contact you. Thanks for your time!

  1. I also have a blog that I check daily and try to post on several times a month. I do go on Facebook a few time during the day, but find it exhausting mentally when trying to keep up. My husband has been trying to get me on Instagram but I hear that it too is hard to locate posts. That is why I stick to my little blog. I feel that I have more control and I am not on the computer all the time.

  2. I do not have a facebook account, not a desire to get one, but I read quilt blogs anytime I get a few quiet minutes. Love reading yours and would hate to see you stop blogging. Thanks for all you do.

  3. Hi, Wendy: I am happy with blogging and have no interest in doing any of the other social media. If everyone jumps on the "faster" bandwagon, how fast will we end up going? I enjoy reading blogs and getting "the rest of the story" that cannot be included in X many words. And...if we are on social media most of our time, how can we get any quilting done?!?!?! For me, blogging is enough. Just my two cents' worth.

  4. I love computers, I love email, and I LOVE blogs. I avoid Facebook, Twitter, texting, or Instagram. I like to read what people think, not just what they do. I've always liked deeper relationships instead of just acquaintances; I guess that's the difference. I can put it this way: blogs are novels, Facebook is a comic book. I prefer novels.

  5. Hi Wendy, I love to read blogs simply because they are the best way I've found to make new quilting friends, share ideas, tips, tutorials and generally inspiration. Reading blogs motivates me to try new-to-me techniques and frequently result in ah-ha moments when a technique I'd been struggling with suddenly clicks in my brain just because it was described or photographed in a different way. They are invaluable to us quilters who live in remote areas and may not have a local quilt guild or even an LQS within 50 miles. Facebook is mostly for family members to share photos and (hopefully) keep up with the grandchildren who don't live nearby. I access both daily, try to post to my blog two or three times a month, avidly read every blog post by a group of blogging friends, though I follow over 150 blogs, picking and choosing which posts to read depending on their topic/photos that day. Don't always comment as I'd never get off the computer to actually quilt! No instagram or pinterest here for same reason. Sweet little quilt by the way!

  6. I'm not on Facebook. I follow around 100 quilting blogs with Feedly.

  7. I find that Instagram is amgreat way to keep up with things I want to see. And if you see a post that you think you might want to refer back to you are able to flag it. I a,not a fan of facebook but I am on bloglovin and read my blogs faithfully every morning and sometimesmin the afternnoon I will check for new posts. You can find me on Instagram as Bedfordquilter.

  8. To answer your questions Wendy, I am on Facebook, and other social media as well (Instagram and Pinterest). I do find I probably spend more time on those sites because it is easier to do from my phone. For blogging, I have to use my desktop because it is easier for me to type (old school here). I couldn't imagine not being able to come read your wonderful blog!

  9. Good question, Wendy! I'm a blogger only and spend 0% on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. Blogging keeps me focused and in touch with other quilters. I post weekly and follow 14 blogs on a regular basis. I like being in control of how I spend my time. Thanks for the chance to win your little quilt :)

  10. I'm another diehard fan of blogs over Facebook & Instagram. What's the advantage of sacrificing quality and detail just for the sake of saving a little time? A picture may be worth a thousand words (or less) but without learning how a quilt evolved, you miss the real story. It's frustrating that so many bloggers have jumped ship and abandoned many of their followers. Thanks for sticking with us.

  12. I have a blog that doesn't get regular posting, more when I have something to share with descriptive details.

I have also Facebook and connect with fellow quilters more than close friends and family. I also have an Instagram account which I post on, mainly quilting and some of my photography, often as a mini blog post as it is more immediate thank a writing a blog post.

I follow mainly quilters, artists and photographers. I'm doing a BOM and check out what other members are doing with their pieces on both Instagram and Facebook.

I still check my fave bloggers each day, through the the day when I have some time. Probably 3 hours broken up in total for all these places.

I feels you get more out of a blog post about the person and what they have to share.

  13. Hello Wendy ! I have a blog, I'm on FB and Instagram. I think the percentage of all in a day is not over 15 % because I prefer to sew in my sewing room !
I read my mails in the morning and after the lunch.
I read my tablet in the evening in front of the tv.
Thank you for this giveaway !

  14. I get all my quilting info from either emailed newsletters or blogs that I read via bloglovin. Although I have a Facebook account, I spend very little time looking at it. It seems to be filled with uninteresting reposts - just a lot of junk.

    ReplyDelete
  15. I dodn't have a blog myself, but I follow you and others on feedly. I find that more and more bloggers are disappearing, so I started using Instagram. I am on facebook, but except for the group I follow, I'm not sure how I get your messages. I guess I'm in the stone age. Thank you for your blog!

  16. Like you, I was slow to the blogging scene and lurked for a couple years before joining in. I deliberately choose not to do Facebook at all and keep Instagram only for family. I have been very tempted to start an Instagram just for my quilting, because there are more and more quilters on Instagram with wonderful pics. BUT... I love the story behind the quilts and that's where blogging posts shine. I do have lots and lots of blogs I follow on a blog reader so they can be read from my smart phone wherever I'm at, but I rarely comment that way--I'm just skimming. I save my commenting for when I get on my Desktop to check my link list of fave quilters. The social side of it and resulting 'time suck' has really got to me in the last year, feeling like I need to prioritize my time better, not start new distractions! I've read a lot of posts about this subject and it's funny because there seem to be 2 camps of people. Those who love social media most accessible from their smart phones {facebook, instagram etc.} and then those who like the slower pace of blogging from wherever. There doesn't seem to be very many people who can keep up with it all without feeling stressed though!

  17. I love and very much enjoy reading blogs. It really is a labor of love to photograph and compose beautiful stories about quilts and life in general. I would recommend Instagram over Facebook, but I have all three blog, instagram and Facebook. My own blog has had to be put on hold and made a lower priority but my quilty soul has been fed with wonderful blogs like yours as well as quick peek at Instagram throughout the day.

  18. Social media can be a black hole for me! I blog, am on facebook, instagram and pinterest. Instagram is for the pretty pictures I like to scroll through. I put a big variety of photos on Instagram. When we aren't winding down a big swap my facebook group isn't that chatty and I'd prefer to spend my time blogging- that's where I have built my quilty relationships. Super cut little quilt!

  19. Hi Wendy, I've only started blogging and find it more rewarding to share quilting information on my blog than Facebook which I use just to keep in touch with family and friends. What I like about blogging and reading blogs is that you can filter what you want to read whereas with FB there is always something that upsets me which is why I spend very little time on FB. I probably spend at least an hour or maybe two a day reading and responding to posts. Then there's Pinterest which is another story. BTW, I wasn't attracted to your post title, I saw the quilt and liked the pattern which is a great one for using up the stash.

  20. I'll bet you spend a LOT of time wading through all the wonderful insightful answers to your very thought-provoking questions!

Personally I am on FB and Instagram and have a blog (obviously---that's how we were able to connect in person!! Gotta love our blogs!)... However, I hate to lose time going through the zillions of posts so I'm a skimmer and big deleter! I also am not religious about checking blogs.
But welcome to the 21st Century, Wendy!! You might even need to get a smart phone, while you're at it, girlfriend!! Time to start texting~!!
    ;-))

  21. I am NOT on Facebook or Instagram or Insta-anything--
I only like blogging...I love reading blogs and feel as if i can really get to know people through their posts...
(Frankly, I don't even like texting on my phone--I like to hear a human voice ;))) ).

  22. I use Bloglovin' to keep track of when people post on their blogs. On ever day. I like that your grandson is the random number generator. Just leave me out of the giveaway, let someone else enjoy the quilt.

  23. I prefer blog posts over Facebook or Instagram. I do not have a smart phone (someday soon maybe) so I can look at Instagram but not post. Facebook, I use for quilt group activity or playing games. I post a little under my own page but it is all my quilting pictures that you would probably see on my blog. That is more for family members to see that have no interest in reading blog posts.
I use Bloglovin'as the source for reading blogs and have a list of about 300 though I have regulars that I visit and the rest if something about their post catches my eye. I have made some great blog friends and have met a couple of them in person. You can save a post on Facebook to go back and review at a later time but other than that, I find it hard to remember where things are that I have seen and come to mind at a later date. I have a prim group on Facebook with over a 1000 members but not many post their quilt pictures???

    ReplyDelete
  24. I love reading blogs. It expands my "quilting horizons" and keeps me connected to a wider quilting world. I only read a few regularly and check into a few others just once in a while. I don't do any social media. I am not even on facebook. I would rather quilt so I limit my time on the computer. I always want my quilting to be joyful without pressure to participate in things that take away my time. Love your little quilt.

  25. i blog and am on facebook but NOT instagram, pinterest, twitter, etc. i consider my blog primary as i post most of my photos there; facebook is like instant info, but spend most of my time on blogs reading about others' quilts and quilting and other thoughts....love your little quilt but no need to include me in giveaway...

  26. My husband and I do not have a Facebook account because am sure it would be all consuming. I do have an Instagram account but only occasionally check it. However I love reading blogs! I don't have but one local quilting buddy so my blog friends fill a huge void.... I learn so much that I would never be exposed to otherwise. Thank you all for all the sharing! And all your kind replies to questions.

  27. I read multiple blogs but don't have one, although I am considering blogging. I have never done Facebook, although I have an account that I established just to get a photo from someone's page that I needed for a quilt label. I haven't "touched" facebook since (that was a year ago). I am glad to find a kindred spirit in that facebook never has held any appeal for me. I have a Pinterest account, but don't use it much. It's too overwhelming. And here's my biggest confession: I don't have a smart phone. My cell is a basic flip phone and I don't text! I know I sound like a dinosaur, but I retired six years ago from the financial industry and it has been wonderful not to feel I have to stay "up" on the latest tech trends. I still spend too much time reading blogs that I really should be sewing and quilting. Oh well...

    ReplyDelete
  28. I enjoy reading blogs. I usually read them in the morning. I don't have a FB or IG acct. Sometimes I look at quilting IG pics and the IG accts I look at are mainly by quilter that use to blog.

  29. Hi Wendy,
I haven't read all the comments yet, so don't know what everyone else has said. Will give you my opinion and then read them. I have a Facebook account, but don't really understand how it works and don't really care. Like you, others talked me into it. I don't like it and spend hardly any time on it. I love blogs. So much more interesting and so much more informative. I love that people are so willing to share and to help others. Please don't give up your blog. Just my two cents on the subject.

Most of all, I'm very relieved that you are going to keep blogging!victoriacarrollparkhill@yahoo.com

  31. I only follow blogs. I don't use Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest or twitter. I have a FB page, account, whatever you call it but I hate FB. I use a blog reader, Feedly, and am very happy browsing the blogs I follow. If a blogger packs up and moves to Instagram, they are dead to me ;-)

  32. I am on Facebook but only check it infrequently(maybe once a week) and only for ten to fifteen minutes. I'm kind of sorry I ever joined. I do check blogs and Instagram every day and prefer them to FB. Instagram is nice because it's so quick but I enjoy spending more time on the blogs that I follow.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I follow blogs, am not on FB, Instagram or twitter. I do have Pinterest but have scaled back on using it due to frustrating changes they are making. I love reading blogs. They keep me in touch with what quilters around the world are doing. I'm a process girl and love all the information I can get from blogs. And Wendy, thanks to you, I have learnt so much about potholder quilts. I'm so glad you are going to continue blogging, it would be a great loss if you didn't.

  34. i am on facebook but just for a while in the morning and later in the day and don't do instragram at all. I post my blogs on face book and twitter and google plus

  36. I read blogs, but I don't do Facebook, Twitter, Tweet, text or anything else. I only use my cellphone when needed. I like to use my home phone to talk. Maybe I'm just old-fashioned (I'm old) and like my simple life. I enjoy belonging to quilt groups on the net and searching for shops or what I need. I enjoy your blog and others, but don't need to be 'plugged in' all the time to see and know 'everything.' Enjoy simple.

  37. In the early morning I enjoy going to various Facebook sites and reading their blogs. I get many good ideas from seeing and reading what other quilters have done or made but I have no Facebook or blog accounts myself. I am part of a Quilting group that posts the quilts/projects that we have made.

  38. I really only have Facebook for the family affairs. I have joined a couple FB groups but seldom check on them. I really love reading blogs and I do Pinterest. Hugs, I love the little quilt!

    ReplyDelete
  39. I use FB only to follow groups or SAL's. I'm a scanner--usually breeze through lots of blogs to check out photos and only stop to read if something really catches my attention. That's why I have been spending more and more time on IG and have been considering dropping my blog posts--so much more easy and fun!

  40. I'm not keen on Facebook but have to admit to finding Instagram really handy - so quick, immediate, easy to follow and easy to post. I keep discovering new features on it - making communication better and better. I still like blogs for more detail, great tutorials, and a great way to record progress. Am not blog posting as often now as it is so time consuming - but don't want to give it up!

    ReplyDelete
  41. I do enjoy reading blogs and getting to know the blogger through their stories. Facebook, I really don't pay much attention except if I have to. Instagram is a fun and easy way to look at photos quickly, but it's more of a way to scan and look at pretty pictures. Not much details. I guess all of the different forms meet different needs or time commitments. I was afraid when I started your post that you were going to stop blogging., but I'm glad you made it clear that you were still willing to share your stores. :0)

  42. I allow myself 1 hour w/ coffee in the a.m. to read emails, blogs, FB & shop news. You can get sucked into FB but I try to scroll quickly so I don't. My blogs are world wide so I guess I travel a little every morning. Do not do Instagram & Pinterest has stopped sending emails so forget to check it. I currently have a staggering # to check out....Susan

  43. I control my time on the computer by limiting myself to about 5 or 6 blogs. I have no desire to have my own blog, as I would rather spend my time with a needle in my hand. I am on facebook, but seldom ever post and I have no interest in Tweeter, Instagram and Pinterest, etc. So glad you are just taking a survey and not telling us you are going to stop blogging. Happy Stitching!

    ReplyDelete
  44. I love reading my fave quilt blogs and I do use Pinterest for inspiration and find new blogs that way sometimes. Though tempting at times, I'm not on FB or Instagram--I'm afraid of the time they would take!

    ReplyDelete
  45. I am a Blogger through and through. I set up a FB account only to keep up with far flung family and to share news of the BUILD A BARN book/quilts (at this point, I check it once a week and limit myself to 15 minutes). I do like IG and enjoy scrolling through those posts on my phone when I am sitting and waiting for whatever. But blogging is and will remain my one true love.

  46. I do not blog, but I follow quite a few bloggers. I use Bloglovin' to capture my favorite feeds. I am a heavy user of Facebook. Also have twiter, Instagram, pinterest accounts, but I use them less often. I like Facebook for following family and friends. I really like following blogs for more specific interests. Although, if a blogger I like has a facebook page, I am likely to follow that too. I spend too much time on the computer!

    ReplyDelete
  47. I like blogs much better than Facebook. I don't like the "friend" designation. I don't like defriending. I don't have a created blog. But when I started a new computer recently, I made sure all my favorites - blogs were the first thing I moved to this new computer. Love BLOGS.

  48. So interesting to read all the comments! I think this is a self-selecting group, because only serious blog readers would bother to reply. But, as a blogger, I am heartened to see so many other blogging fans are still around!

Like many of the others, blogging for me is about community and this shared obsession of ours. Instagram looks tempting, but I think I am too distractable to look at pretty photos all day. I already have too many ideas!

What I say to myself is, "am I a creator or a consumer?" That always keeps me on track!

    ReplyDelete
  49. I read more blogs via the email newsletter than Facebook. It seems that Facebook is loaded down with all sorts of suggestions that I do not care about and wastes a lot of time and space wading through it. I use it mainly for family and friends that live away. I enjoy the blogs that I read daily and spend WAY too much time on them. Canbesweet@aol.com

  50. What a sweet little quilt, Wendy! How nice of you to offer that to your readers! I tried to bid on your little auction quilt, but was outbid quickly after reaching my limit. : (
I like the "community" of blogging. I am not a guild member and blogs provide that for me. Getting to know people beyond the photo of a quilt they have made is something I find satisfying.
Not on FB, Instagram, or Twitter. I do have a Pinterest account, but I don't follow others. I just use it to keep track of things I want to be able to find again.

  51. I don't like Facebook. I feel I'm the only one not on it. I'm 36. It's too boastful and moany for me! I just love love love blogs. I like the in process pictures, the finished quilt pictures, the fabric and notion pictures. I like seeing a slice of life on the other side of the world. I'm in Australia. Looking at blogs is my chill time! Sit down and chill! I've learned everything I know from blogs!! emilyste7ens at gmail dot com:)

  52. I have a blog and only FB. I prefer to read blogs, in the early morning Facebook is for me more a wasting time, for quick news .

  53. Hi Wendy, I blog from time to time, but find it takes me such a time to post. I mainly use IG nowadays and am on FB. Still love reading blogs. The thing with a blog is your putting it out for the world to see. I get many freinds request of FB and IG but if I don't know these people or know of them through a freind of freind I don't want them knowing my every movement. I can never understand someone sending me freinds request when they don't know me or never will. I Enjoy FB groups I'm in as I get to see wonderful quilts and read was going on in the Quilty world. BTW I'm going to be in Maine in June.

  54. You must be reading my mind, Wendy, because I was thinking the same thing yesterday. I look at FB everyday, but really it is just people re-posting photos, news, jokes, nothing personal about their own lives. I much prefer blogs and am sad to see that people have moved away from them. The only personal things I see from most of my friends on FB are photos of their grandchildren, never anything about themselves. I had a blog for years but gave up posting from lack of response. You have a wonderful blog and I hope you keep going with it. I love all your quilting updates!

    ReplyDelete
  55. I actually follow blogs through bloglovin, the negative part of that is that the emails arrive a day late, which puts you out of the running for "giveaways" since they usually run for one day. By the time I read the blog the contest is over. Then I move on to facebook and spend hours checking out the notifications and posts. LOL You can tag your favorite posts that you want to revisit quite easily. Have someone show you that. Recently, my daughter has forced me to get with it and post on instagram as well. URGH why does the world move so fast! I'll never know. She has also tried to get me to blog or vlog... not happening here. She has moved on to vlogging and of course I follow a few of those as well. good luck with the fast pace of social media and think about all the paper you are saving.

    ReplyDelete
  56. I follow several blogs through Bloglovin and some individual ones. I like the antique fabric, quilt history, and vintage sewing machine groups on FB. All said, I enjoy a mix of bits of info and loving, sharing blog ladies and gentlemen.

    ReplyDelete
  57. I'm a blogger who took a vacation from it and am now trying to get back to posting once a week. I also have Pinterest, Facebook, and occasionally check Instagram.

I stopped posting on my blog because I didn't think I had anything interesting to write about. Now I'm working on a challenge quilt that I don't want to reveal until June so again nothing fun to share.

I use Pinterest to save quilts I like and for inspiration. I'm considering paring down Facebook. I started simply to keep track of family and friends and its gotten out of control. A good time waster and I don't need political news. I occasionally will check Instagram but not often.

    ReplyDelete
  58. I love reading blogs but for something faster I would recommend Instagram. I have a facebook account but mostly use it with private/interest groups I am a member of like Wool Applique or Needleturn or, Hand Quilting. It's much faster to just click on the group link on the side bar to see what folks are up to than searching all over.

    ReplyDelete
  59. I enjoy blogging and reading blogs even though FB & IG are out there. Blogging is more personal, more like a true dialogue or conversation with friends over coffee.
FB for me is ideal for quick "group shares".

    ReplyDelete
  60. I'm very familiar with computers (from my working years) so using various social media isn't intimidating but I find it is time consuming. I only began quilting a year ago and am not able to get to many classes and such because I have huge chemical sensitivities (frangrances, etc.). Reading blogs has helped me learn a great deal but it also makes me feel connected in a bit more personal way. Having said that it was getting to take up too much time so I have cut it back somewhat. Now that I know a tiny bit more about what I'm doing I'm more selective. I try to think of internet as a tool that I can use in whatever ways benefit me or suit my time frames. If you let them computers will suck you into a black hole, but really you're in charge.

    ReplyDelete
  61. I don't blog myself, but I have a few I read daily. Some of my favorite bloggers have gone over to Facebook. Makes me sad, but I'm trying to spend less time on these devices, not more, so I just say "good-bye" and carry on with the others.

    ReplyDelete
  62. I am not a blogger, however spend the first hour of my day over coffee reading quilting blogs. I have several that I follow faithfully. Also, love the fact that I connect with people from Japan, Australia and Europe. I do read FB, but have to wade through all the other "stuff".

  63. I have a blog, use Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. Yes it can be a black hole at times, but I love seeing everybody's pictures and posts showing there quilts! Are usually spend time in the morning or evening checking in. I have not blogged recently but hopefully will change this, it has been a wonderful tool for meeting people with similar interests. I have found it to be a positive tool that requires time management! 🤣

  64. I don't do Facebook, Twitter or Instagram. I have a blog and that takes enough time. I enjoy reading the blogs while sipping my early morning cup of coffee. I'm old fashioned that way, I actually prefer reading by holding the book in my hands, not on a tablet or books on tape! No matter what you decide to go, it is your decision and yours alone.

  65. I love your little quilt. I am on facebook but spend most of my time playing games and keeping up with family. I too have a blog. I love reading posts of favorite blogger of which you are one. 66. HI Wendy, what a pretty quilt ! We don't have a Facebook account, as we think it is too time-consuming. We do have Twitter, which is fast and easy to use, plus Pinterest for posting inspirational quilt photos that we want to save for future reference.
We were finding that we were spending all our time on social media, which greatly limited the time available for actually sewing quilts. One of our New Year's resolutions for 2017 was to spending more time off line and more time finishing our works-in-progress. So far, that's worked out pretty well. But, we do love to drop in on our favorites blogs, like yours, and see all the pretty things that other quilters are doing. Blessings always, from Marina and Daryl Lynn

  67. Hi Wendy! What a sweet little quilt! I love that little poison green 9-patch! Sweet! So....I do have a FB account, but I've never posted on it....I just lurk, and get to see the pics my family posts! It seems the 40 and younger crowd lives by FB....it's their only way of communicating! We actually had family post birth announcements ONLY on FB! If we hadn't caught the posting by chance...we would never have known the child excisted! Sheesh! I think I'm so disgusted by that trend, that I refuse to get involved in it. Same with all the other social media! But I love blogging! I really enjoy the blogs for all the stories behind the quilts. It's the details and the history that I really want to read about. And also the foodie blogs! Great recipes, and the pics are gorgeous!

  68. I am on Facebook, but I love reading blogs. I spend quite a while each day catching up on all the blogs I read (which is quite a few).

  70. I have a woefully neglected blog, read other peoples blogs and a few forums (sewing & quilting). That's it - no FB, IG, pinterest, etc. I must say that I have been pondering IG since it's easier to just post a photo and quick comment about a project. But, yeah, I need yet something else to drag me away from actually working on projects like I need a summer cold.

  71. Hello! I love reading your blog and others. No facebook for me, I don't understand why people put all their info on there. The little quilt is darling. Two walls of my sewing room have little quilts hanging.

  72. I have a facebook account and use it maybe twice a month. It doesn't give me the same satisfaction that blogging does. I sit down and read blogs every day at lunch. It's part of my routine. My lunch goes from noon to 2:30 pm sometimes -ha!. I love the interaction, the pictures, and the new designs.

  73. Facebook is a fun way to pass the time and find out what people are up to. I "like" lots of fellow quilters, old friends, and there are several who have moved to Facebook and aren't available on blogs. It is a nice way to network - remember birthdays, etc. It is hard to go back to older posts and maybe remember where you saw something or who said what, as you noticed. I like writing blog posts better, so I write them, and post links on Facebook.

  74. Facebook just confuses me so although i have pages there I dont check them. After resisting for ages I started using instagram about 7 months ago and love it. I found lots of long lost blog friends on there and lots of new friends. It's and easy quick to scroll through and see what everyone is up to. I still love blogging too but at the moment it does seem to take up more time.

  75. I was on Facebook for 6 months before I deleted my account. It was confusing and I felt I didn't have total control over it like I do my blog. People can put stuff on your Facebook wall but they can't mess with your blog. It was too much "noise" for me and a time-waster. I want to live life, go on hikes, play with my grandchildren, be fully present in the company of others, not have my eyes glued to a device and miss out on what's going on around me. I'm sad that so many don't blog anymore but I will keep blogging, even if just for me, because I love it. :-) I guess I like the 19th century better than the 21st. :-)

  76. What a great question Wendy. I've been reading through these comments and it is interesting.
I am sort of "everywhere" on social media, but actually don't spend a lot of time anywhere except my weekly blog. I try to post every week and share ideas and progress and other "fun" stuff.
I do like Intagram for its ease and speed.
I have a FB group for my swaps for everyone to share their projects and a personal FB, but I don't spend tons of time there as it becomes a black hole.
Blogging has provided me with lots a great online blog friends, like you - and I'm so grateful for them.
the little quilt is a such a cutie!!

  77. I always read the blogs that I subscribe to. In fact you introduced me to Barbara Brackman's "Stars in a Time Warp. I seldom scroll through facebook. I hope you keep blogging along.

  78. That is a sweet little quilt!! I like blogging a lot too. I like reading the stories behind the projects and I feel like I get to know the bloggers that I follow even though I've never met them. I rarely look at Facebook but every morning when I check my blogs I check Instagram too. I post there as well - it's instant gratification to get 50, 80, 100 likes in just a few hours compared to 6-8 comments for the same pictures in a blogpost. Definitely I like blogging better than Instagram but most of all I love connecting with other likeminded quilter's all over the world.

  79. I only read blogs! Many in my family do the Facebook thing. To much info gets on there.. And then people wonder why they get all the stuff they would rather not see. It is a choice for everyone and I am a "NOT for me Facebook person"..
The small quilt is so pretty.. Would look nice in my sewing room.

  80. Well, you hit a point of interest to your readers with this post, Wendy! Lots of comments to read through here.

I much prefer blogs to any other method of connecting on the internet. I like reading posts that detail the background, thoughts, and the decision-making process of other quilters (and other bloggers I follow) as opposed to the quick sentence on facebook and Instagram. Sometimes bloggers just want the quick comment but other times a back-and-forth conversation begins via email, and I like that, too. At times it's hard to keep up with reading and commenting on all the blogs I love, not to mention responding to comments on my blog. Don't get me wrong: I love that part of blogging but it does take time.

I have a facebook account (which I only recently began using to get Cheri Payne's patterns for the Baskets of Plenty sew along) and am on pinterest but only to save images, not to search, and I follow blogs on feedly and/or bloglovin.

For me, being online can be a time sapper/waster, especially if I'm a little tired and am indecisive about whatever I'm working on. It's easier to read and look than be up and doing when I'm tired.

Thanks for starting this conversation. I'm a family history blogger, too, and this has been a topic in that community of bloggers where there has been a great shift from blogging to facebook. Sometimes I wonder if it's the younger generation heading in that direction because it's so immediate with a broad readership. Post a question to a group and with 10 minutes 24 people have responded. I don't know. I think in any group/community there will be some die-hard bloggers and some who move away from blogging toward something speedier.

  82. Wendy: I am a Bloglovin Junkie!!! I follow so many blogs. I myself, am not a blogger, I don't have time, cuz I am always reading the blogs that I follow. I am on Facebook too! I had to laugh when you wrote: "...it takes me hours because just when I see something I like, whoosh, it’s gone and I spend way too long looking for it again..."; I had JUST told my husband this exact same thing! I have a love/hate relationship with FB! I enjoy all my friends' family, vacation, etc. posts. I love all the quilt groups' sharing, it's the JUNK I don't care for! I spend waaaaaayyyyyy too much time on FB! Back to Blog Land... I so enjoy following your blog, even though I don't comment very often. I am posting this time, because I would love to win that adorable mini quilt! Thank you for the chance to win and for all the sharing you do on your blog! HUGS... and stitches

  84. This is such an interesting question!! For me, FB is mostly for personal life (extended family, church) and I have mixed feelings about it and am always on the verge of deleting my account! I really love Instagram. It is so simple and quick and is like a little visual diary. I really enjoy reading blogs and connecting with all kinds of quilters. It's hard to achieve a balance though and I'm real conscious of needing to limit my time online... before the day gets away!
