Scrap Giveaway

Far, far away I hope! From my pile to yours.

I spent all evening sorting and cutting and only made it through 1 1/2 baskets! But I promised to post this today so I will just have to have another giveaway after I finish the sorting.

My method of sorting:
I have 3 sizes of scraps in my baskets. 1) large; suitable for almost any project 2) medium; suitable for most piecing or applique scrap quilts and 3) "Scrids"; scrids are what I call pieces that are best suited for applique, as they are often odd shaped and would require to much work for me to sort through and press for piecing.

Heaven forbid, I should giveaway the last bit of any one fabric, so, I first cut a 5" strip for myself and put the remaining piece in a pile (or actually 2) to send away. The pile on the right is what I consider "large" good size scraps suitable for almost any project. The pile on the left is what I call "scrids".

They could ALL be yours. Simply leave me a comment on how you handle your scraps and I will chose one by random. (I have tried to figure out the random generator, but it is more likely I will throw all your names in a hat and let Mr. CG pick one). I am willing to ship anywhere that accepts Global Priority. So please feel free to comment wherever you are. I'm looking forward to hearing from you. I think I fixed my "no reply" comment, thanks to Lori at Humble Quilts, but if you have any trouble feel free to e-mail me.
I will pick the winner and post it next Friday (January 23). Since I am new to this, it will give me an entire week to get organized (and to read all your comments)

This is the result of the cutoff ends. If anyone can figure out what to do with these little gems, I would be happy to send them off to you.

  1. I sort by type (2.5 inch strips and 1.5 inch strips) and also a grab bag of odd sizes.

  2. I sort mine by color and size, but it doesn't stay
like that for long, my little gremlin love to play
    with them.

  3. I sort them by the person who created them and good memories,

  4. As long as I'm here, I'll sign up! Other's peoples scraps are so much funner!! I turn to my scraps before turning to my regular stash depending on what I'm looking for or making. When they get small I cut them into squares and put them in baggies waiting for a project.
And you are still no reply.....feel free to practice on my blog, but please email me your email address and we can chat. loridweightwatchers@gmail.com

  5. Every year I pick a specific project for scraps...this year is going to be a scrappy applique pictures.

  6. Wow! All of that work and you are only half-done :) I love scraps - I use them in everything. I have a cabinet for my largest pieces, anything smaller than a fat quarter goes into a small bin and anything smaller than a five inch square goes into a little drawer. I have a small dresser that I use ONLY for repros - and nobody gets to touch them!! Lol - good luck with with your scrap busting and please feel free to pass along anything you're finished with - Thanks for the chance to win!

  7. I love scraps and scrap quilts. I sort mine into my preferred sizes so they are ready in an instant to use in my next scrap project. I love to make quilts of all sizes as well as tote bags and zip bags. Thanks for the chance to expand my fabric scraps.

  8. I cut 2.5 inch strips, 1.5 inch strips and crumbs and strings. frog2quilt@gmail.com

  9. i usually cut them into strips of 1/2,21/2,2,31/2. Then sometimes I just use the wonky shapes sewing them together and make crazy fabric pieces and then cut into the desired size I need. It can be fun mindless sewing.

  10. My scraps are mainly smaller in size than many put in their scrap baskets. I keep my plaids loose in a separate basket because it is sometimes hard to sort them by color. My cottons are sorted by color and put into plastic zip log bags though often the bags aren't zipped. Then the bags are kept in two baskets.

  11. I have some cut into 2.5, 2 and 1.5 inch squares and strips. I have a basket of strings. And I have some scraps just sorted by color that I dig through when I need a bit of a particular color. I rarely make a quilt with just a few fabrics. I love, love, love scrappy quilts!

    ReplyDelete
  12. I keep all my scraps in a big bucket....and when I going to make a quilt I pull what I can from my scraps, then I know what I have to buy to make my quilt.....

    ReplyDelete
  13. I keep making scraps quilts. I am down to 1.5 inch squares and some strings for two more quilts. I love scraps so much I actually order scrap bags instead of yardage sometimes. I never seem to have enough!

  14. I don't really have a system for sorting my scraps. I put them all in a basket and sort through when I need any. I really like your system and may try that.

  15. I am pretty good at using up my scraps, but I do keep them in a basket in my sewing closet. I fish through there very often when I applique, looking for the perfect size and pattern.

  16. I'm so glad you are blogging, Wendy! And I'm loving seeing your progress on your Dear Jane! It's awesome! As for my scraps.....I keep my repros separate from the other stuff, and they are sorted by color into little bins. I cut a 6" strip off of yardage when I have it out and pressed, and I add that to the scraps so I'll have bigger pieces to use. (I got that from Cyndi.....she's so smart!) :o)

  17. I love scraps! I have an ice cream bucket that I keep anything that can't be re-folded onto my shelf or that I don't want to keep around, and I cut them into 2 inch squares. I go to my bucket first before my shelf to see if there's something I can use. I use the 2 inch squares to make blocks or small gifts. The leftover bits from cutting the 2 inch squares I sew into "made fabric" 8" blocks by color whenever enough of one color accumulates. Until then I leave the crumbs in the ice cream bucket with the rest of the scraps. I have only been quilting 2 years and don't have much fabric, so this method works for me. I love repro. fabrics and don't have very many. I will gladly take any size scrap you have including the trimmings! Thank you so much for the giveaway! sarah@forrussia.org

  19. The grass, err scraps are always greener in someone else's scrap pile! :) I used to save anything that could be cut as small at one and a half inch squares. Now I save even smaller pieces to use in paper-piecing little 3 inch houses. The bottom right drawer in my sewing desk is the larger scrap catcher and a photo box holds the 1 1/2" pieces. When those are full, they are transfered out to see-through boxes for use and the processs starts over. Because I mix all types of fabrics, I don't sort my scraps into like piles, they just all go together.
Thanks for the chance at some wonderful pieces, and that bucket of gems looks like it would be great for house-building!

  20. I Save them for applique and small projects.Sort them by size. Scrap or small bits.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I always save my scraps in a basket where they are handy to get to

    ReplyDelete
  22. I have a basket - 12 in total - for each colour and throw them in! I have separate containers for triangles, strips, strings and 2.5" binding strips.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I sort my scraps by color, in a Ziplock bag, one by color.
For the cutoff ends, I use them for borders, or very small appliqué shapes.

    ReplyDelete
  24. My scraps are in big ziploc bags- one for batiks, one for anything narrower than 6 inches, one for solids or "near solids" and two for everything else. I put the cutoff ends in a mostly sewn pillow- to be sewn up when it is full. It becomes very dense and perfect for a firm floor cushion!

  26. I am new to quilting but try to bag sizes that I made to many of and smaller scraps go into a tub that my daughter and I like to go through to make odds and ends.... She is 15 and likes to make pillows. Last night she attempted her first little applique. Lol she tried but mom here isn't much help because I am just learning myself..... sonjasmith76@yahoo.com

  27. I am new to sewing and quilting, but so far I put anything smaller than a fat quarter in a bin. And when the bin gets full (small bin) I cut them into quilting sized shapes, either squares or strips in common sizes. Anything fat quarter sized or bigger gets ruler folded and put on the shelf. I don't have a ton of fabrics yet so I feel lucky when I have anything bigger than a fat quarter. Have a great day!

  29. I have my large and medium scraps colour coded so I can find them. I have a box of scrids (never heard that word before!) [make that two boxes] that I use for applique and other projects that just need a little bit of fabric. I have meaning to make a string quilt but haven't got there yet. I have the ingredients.....one day.

  34. I have all my scraps, unsorted, in one bin! I am still a fairly new quilter and don't have so many scraps yet. But I looove scrappy quilts so I would welcome the scrap stash builder :)

  35. Wendy, I just discovered your blog. I tend to sort my piles of scraps by type and then by color, if I get that far. Thanks for putting my name in your hat.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I like to sort scraps by size and then light or dark. I also have a pile of little odd bits and pieces. Things that are too small for most projects but great for little tiny minis. If I can cut a 1" square from it, I do and I have a pile of those for mini quilts.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I cut assorted strip and square sizes. I also have a basket with far too much fabric in it that still needs to be whittled into strips and squares. Thanks for the give-away!

    ReplyDelete
  38. I cut my scraps into the sizes from Bonnie Hunter's scrap user's system and store them by size and darks or lights/neutrals. It's much better than my old non system of everything jumbled together

    ReplyDelete
  39. I keep everything down to about an 1" in width, then I put it into a couple scrap bins (now a market cart). When I get ready to start a scrap bin project then I sort by the color families I want to work with. It's always different, so it doesn't work to sort all the time.:) Thanks for a very fun giveaway!

    ReplyDelete
  40. I have big plans for all my scraps, just don 't know what...LOL Have thought of doing a log cabin block.....thanks for the giveaway..

  41. How do I handle my scraps???....They get thrown in a bin and I try not to look at them too much :)

    ReplyDelete
  42. Oh, My ! What a lovely and generous chance of winning those yummy scraps... especially as they are reproduction fabrics, and I can't find these in my little country corner of Belgium . So now I'm crossing my fingers (and toes) that I could be the Lucky winner, who knows ? :))

How do I handle with my scraps ? Well I've found out that the best system for me is a plastic 6 drawers column and I just put my scraps in there by COLOR. I'm not sorting my scraps by size ---> as a handpiecer (and applique) any size counts to me and I just make do with what I've got. Yet, sorting them by color helps a lot when I'm looking for "just the right tiny piece" :))

    THANKS again,

    XOXOXOXO
    NADINE

  43. What a gorgeous giveaway, thank Yoy for this chance.
I hope Netherlands is not too far away.
And my scraps I put them in a box waiting on a nice pattern.

  44. I love your scrap piles! I make tiny paper pieced jewelry - so I use all those small pieces that the normal (haha!) person would thrown in the trash! I also love making scrap quilts with small pieces, and am working on a tiny 9 patch now. So fun!

    ReplyDelete
  45. I put strips in drawers by color for strip quilts. I have a box just for 1" and 1 1/2" strips of reproduction fabrics. I also keep different size squares (trying to follow Bonnie Hunter's plan, but not too successful). I'm working on a Dear Jane quilt so need more variety of reproductions.

    ReplyDelete
  46. What yummy scraps. I organize mine by color and ziplock bag them together and put them in a large bin. I do keep all my strips together no matter the color. Thanks

    ReplyDelete
  47. When a piece of fabric is on the small side, I usually cut it into strips of varying widths and store them in labelled baskets so I can pull from them for future projects - it's been a great system for me! Scraps are my FAVORITES!

  48. I cut mine into different sizes. Do I can have my go to boxes.

  49. I Love scraps! I cut them with templates, Accuquilt Go die or strips depending on the size of the scrap. Then they are placed in plastic containers for specific quilt projects until I have enough to complete the quilt. Thank you!

    ReplyDelete
  50. I put all my scraps into a very large plastic bag with handle and then rummage through it to fond the color I need. There has to be a better way...

    ReplyDelete
  51. Depending on the size of the scrap I will cut 1 ½ & 2 ½ strips, 5" squares and the rest will be in a appliqué pile. I will the sort by color.

    ReplyDelete
  52. I'm just starting my scrap collecting which I think I will sort into color labeled baskets. I generally only sew with reproduction fabrics and my collection sure could use some help.

  53. I've been going through my scraps and cutting them into uniform sizes for easy storage. Now I need to stop looking at them and start using them.

  54. I recently bought some fabric cubes that fit my bookcase. I cut a piece of poster board to fit the diagonal and put scraps by color in each cube with reproductions in front and everything else in the back. First I do cut a 1.5 inch square of every fabric that comes my way for a someday charm postage stamp quilt. Thanks for the chance to add to my slowly growing supply.

  55. I dont have a large fabric stash, so everything is just in bins according to colour. and charm packs and other precuts go in my black and white bin.

  58. I'm attempting to follow the Scrap Therapy method of cutting my scraps into 2", 3 ½" and 5" squares. I also have a bin with odd size thin strips that are too small for cutting into squares. So far so good!

  59. I love scrappy quilts and try to keep my scraps sorted according to size and by strips for log cabins or squares for nine patches.

  60. I sort my scraps by color and also by category, such as Christmas, repro's, etc. I don't precut them. Thanks for the chance to win your scraps, it's always fun to add new variety to the scraps.

  61. I like to cut down into 2" and 2½" strips and or squares and put them into their respective baskets or bins. I love my reproduction fabrics best of all, with a pretty floral running a close second.

  62. Mine are sorted by color and by size. Lately I've been cutting all my repro scraps into 1 3/4" squares for a double Irish chain quilt. And I save 1 1/2" squares, too - used a bunch to make Lori's Cascadia quilt. Thanks for the chance to win your scraps.

    ReplyDelete
  63. I am a fan of Bonnie Hunters method of cutting strips, 1, 1 1/2, 2, 2 1/2 and some 3". I have bins for each size, makes it very easy to just pull my strips and start sewing. I love all the civil war repos. I use weird sizes for applique (another bin). I have just learned another technique to use all those little bits you call "cutoff ends". They are turned into a twisted fabric twine. I would appreciate someone else's scraps to add variety to my stash. I could exchange scraps if you like.

Hope you are enjoying a great week. Good luck with those piles.

  68. What a great idea for a give-away.
I use scraps a lot and sort them in glas jars, yes glas jars. If I start a project the jars will be reserved for that particular project.

  71. I love love scrap quilts..so therefore I love scraps. So much fun to sort them and cut into useable pieces with my accuquilt.

  72. From the looks of it, these would be perfect for my ongoing project of making new fabrics from little scraps (even smaller than those in your giveaway).

  73. I am a pretty new "patchworker" and my scraps are all in a plastic bag. I began some days ago the patchwork "1000 fabrics" with apple core, using my scraps (45 pieces stiched already). but I don't have 999 different fabrics! I intend to begin the Lucy Boston's patchwork of the Crosses, for which I need also a lot of different little pieces. So I would say that I try to recycle fabric scraps.
    Many thanks for your giveaway!

  74. When I get down to the smaller scraps..after cutting a 1" strip which I am collecting for a log cabin, I usually collect the small but usable scraps in a shopping bag or large basket which can then be given to a friend or new quilter/appliquer..everyone's fabric always seems to be more exciting then our own..not sure why that is...

    ReplyDelete
  75. I use everything I can. First I cut as many strips as I can, as wide as I can, starting at 6" down to 1" and then the same with squares. I use them in all sorts of projects and my favorites are small/mini quilts. I love the variety of adding other quilters left-overs.

    ReplyDelete
  76. I love scraps and am still searching for the best way to organize and store them. I sure enjoy using them. Thanks for a chance.

  77. I've signed on with my husband's account to say that he has the pile of plaid scraps (light, medium, and dark) from the foundation-pieced schoolhouse quilt he sewed over the holidays. Leftovers are neatly tucked into an old dry sink...unlike my small pieces that are everywhere from my applique projects. He's the engineer! -- Kristy
