Sound familiar?

It had been weeks since I stepped foot in my sewing room. I’m able to manage a few moments of hand stitching each morning, but I have been itching to sit down at my machine. So early Saturday morning I turned it on...

As I feed the pieces through the machine, I wonder why I’m not accomplishing as much as I’d like to these days. I notice my coffee mug is empty so I run downstairs to get a fresh cup. Wait, is that the dryer buzzer? O.k. just a quick fold before I head back up. Hmm, better throw in another load as I may be upstairs for a while. Oops, dropped a towel off the top of the pile. Argh, how is it I missed the dust under this table? Better do the whole floor over. Vacuum cleaner bag is full again. How can we be out of them? A quick run to the hardware store. Oh, what pretty flowers they have today. I really must look through every box to pick just the right one! I’d better put these in the ground right away, it won’t take long. Wow, that Lily of the Valley has really spread, I think I’ll just move a few out front. The phone rings as I enter the house. “Lunch? Oh, I’d love to but I am planning on spending the day in my sewing room. She did what? You don’t say………… o.k., catch you later!” Too late to make a salad, just grab some crackers and get back upstairs! Good grief, how could all those crumbs come from one box? Fine, I’ll vacuum now, it won’t take that long. You’re kidding me, I’m sure I bought this brand last time – they don’t fit? Fine, back to the hardware store to exchange the bags. Done! Now back to my sewing! Although, now that I have a new bag in I might as well finish the rest of the downstairs. Who is that at the door? Can’t quite make it out through this window. Oh good, just the mailman. Better clean that window. O.k., that’s it, back to the sewing room. Who turned on my machine? I hear a voice from downstairs, “want me to start dinner?” So…. Does this sound familiar?

And, on another “does this happen to you?” note – Do you ever find yourself stitching with the same colors as your outfit of the day? I’m usually lucky if my socks match let alone matching my sewing project!
Happy Quilting Today!!

  1. Cute post today. I just let the dust pile up and go about my sewing. The dust will be there tomorrow.

  2. Oh Wendy... You make me laugh!!
I think part of the problem is my aging brain can't remember where I left off--not just that there are so many distractions. I forget where I was or what I was doing! ;-)
    Love your socks!!

  3. I was thinking these very thoughts (well, similar thoughts) this morning. Is it my age or is it some form of ADD that develops as I get older (or was always there but I had some control over it)? I certainly wish it would end! I hope you've managed some time with your machine!

  4. File under "if it isn't one thing it's another"--or as my DH says "Now what else can happen today?" What happened to the sweet, quiet retirees' lives?
Glad you got to the machine--i managed 5 minutes this afternoon...just sewed some 2-sies...hugs, Julierose

  8. Oh my goodness, that is totally my life these days! Just today my husband came in and wanted to have me drive to a town an hour away 'just to keep him company' and the laundry is coming out of my ears and I was going to get some serious quilting in before my sewing machine clogs up from disuse! lol

  9. I loved your "true crime story" !
How funny and how on target Wendy. I always forget how much there is to do inside and outside in the early summer!

  10. I'm a sucker for "how to organize" and time management advice (maybe I'm just searching for some expert to affirm my standard operating procedure) -- anyway, one such book referred to "the tyranny of the urgent." (In an office it's that sudden burst of creativity that comes at 4 p.m. the Friday before your two-week vacation.) Such self-interruptions occur when you fully intend to spend the day sewing. If I'm faced with piecing 42 HSTs and I get restless after ten I make myself work through the eleventh and twelfth. The restlessness disappears and I finish all 42. [Sometimes. I am better at dispensing helpful hints than following them.]

  16. You have nailed it perfectly! I can really relate to your entire post. My sewing room is in a state of total upheaval...but our summers are so short and sweet, just have to be outside at every opportunity. If you figure out a solution, please let us know:-)
