I Made it!

Sorry for the bad photo but I didn't want to wake my husband up this morning to hold it up and I don't have the sleeve on yet.

Nine months to the day ,start to finish, just like a "real" baby. I set this goal because I have such a short attention span that I knew I would never finish it if I couldn't complete it within a year. Debra (Life is a Stitch) asked me how I liked the process and if I would change anything about it? Hmmm... I love the process itself. Fun and portable. I love the way the back comes out with each individual block having its own fabric.

Of course I did change the borders by simply appliqueing circles instead of the pieced borders, but I love how it turned out. I would change the cone shaped border pieces by measuring them separately. I think I may have to fix one or two of them now as I seem to have a slight ripple along two borders. Hopefully it will be an easy fix. As they say... "measure twice, cut once".

I would also change to all hand quilted. I began machine quilting a few of the ones with really tiny pieces and now I am too lazy to take them out. It is 90 % hand quilted so I'm not going to worry about it, but if I do it again - what???? never mind.
The corner blocks came out just fine - after that measurement disaster. I will put a label on the back with much more detail. I wanted the corner blocks to have simply sayings.

Overall I am very happy with it. I can't thank all of my Blog readers enough for all the supportive comments and encouragement to carry on. You are all the best!! I am so glad I started Blogging. Now I can't wait to start the next potholder. "Dutch Oven". Stay tuned.

  3. Oh, Wendy! Your Baby, Jane is BEAUTIFUL! and in nine months!!
I love everything about it! I don't recall what you used for your background fabric (just that you maybe had a bolt to start)?
I'm going to have to try to adopt your "brooding" time table...
I'm more more on the shark baby plan with my quilts - 3 and a half years! :)
Thanks for sharing your progress, method and great finish!!
PS - I love the sentiments you put on your corner pieces!

    1. Thanks Debra, I contemplated the corner sentiments for quite a while and decided on simple and to the point with a lengthy label on the back. My background was a 15 yard bolt of P&B solid that I think is not longer available. I will have to double check with Cyndi, but it is one I would definitely use again if I could. It is sort of putty colored. I don't use solids very often but this worked great.

  5. At least you don't have to change diapers on this baby! The nine months seemed to fly by as I watched your quilt build. A woman with determination. A wonderful finish, Wendy. You made the quilt your own though it is definitely is recognized as a Jane quilt.

  17. I love the way the block colors are on the back. I didn't realize that you were doing that when I first saw your pot holder quilting method. That is so neat!

  18. Wendy,
I have been working on a Dear Jane quilt since October. Laura, from the NE Quilt Museum, informed me that you were also working on the quilt and that you were doing it in a potholder technique, which I was unfamiliar with and decided to do as well. Since then I signed up for your blog and have enjoyed your process and your beautiful quilt. This weekend I realized that I I have made 19 triangles with the wrong dimensions. I had thought that the base of the triangle was 4.5" but have since found out that it is 5". I have been using the EQ software and it does not automatically put the correct size in for the block size. I got the 8" height correct but did not know that I needed 5" for the base. My question to you is if I do it by the potholder technique, is the base for the triangle 5" finished or 4.5" since I will have the binding around it. I appreciate any help that you can send my way. Thanks. Terry

  19. Wow this is amazing Wendy. Nine months! THat was actually a brilliant idea. Mine has been languishing for years, but I still consider it a WIP and not a UFO.

  20. This turned out beautifully, Wendy! Even with the bindings, the points are all so crisp. And the back looks great, too! Your stitches are beautiful - many years of practice, I am sure. Very inspiring, thanks for sharing it all!
