Oops, I did it again!

Guess I need to stop the 4:00 a.m. stitching! Two errors in one week, sheesh! I have precut all my backgrounds and bindings for my Noah and Matilda sew-a-long blocks. I grabbed what I thought was the right binding for this one, but… oh no!

In my defense, they are quite similar, but not close enough to let it ride.

My blocks are adding up.

Only 32 to go! And then we have all the alternating blocks and the border blocks and...

I have cheated madly on some of them. I like to let the fabric do the work. I "modified" the pattern to incorporate this great neon print. (o.k., in this case it was really because I didn't want to applique all those layers!).

I love how this Jo Morton fabric really looks like a cactus.

People often ask if I cut out the backs of my applique. I do if the piece is large enough and if I want to quilt around it. Do you?

I modified this one slightly as I wanted a splash of green and figured I could just add it to the center. I love this purple and black neon print! It is much brighter than it appears in the photo.

I hope you all have a day of mistake free stitching!

  1. These blocks are so beautiful! Your "cheat" just made that block even better.

  3. That is a mistake anyone would make, at any hour of the day. What is the difference, just the shade of blue on the background dots? I think I would have left it that way. :)
I see no cheating here--just making the blocks your own, and playing up the strengths of your fabrics. Beautiful work, as always, Wendy!
Sounds like you and Barb are meeting up. How fun!

  4. Those are really similar fabrics - I like them both and your block is so pretty. I cut away backs occasionally - when I get to the hand quilting I always wish I did it more!!

  6. Looking great, but why in the world are you awake at 4AM? That's about the time I actually fall asleep fairly soundly.

  7. i heard that mistakes are design opportunities...not at all that obvious...

  8. Your blocks look terrific. I love how the cactus turned out too. I changed a few blocks along the way as well. 4:30 am? No sewing for me then!

  9. No mistakes today but then I've only been hand quilting so I guess that doesn't count. I love your neon prints. The star shaped flowers are great and I don't blame you for not wanting to do layers and layers on that other flower. I don't have any neon prints in my stash - how could I have missed them?

  11. It's so much fun watching your blocks come together, especially with the neon prints! I'm not sure I could re-do the binding on the "Oops" block - the fabrics are so similar - does it really stand out when grouped with the other blocks?

  13. Wendy, you are waaay to hard on yourself. I'd never call that a mistake and certainly not worth taking out.
But, of course, you can always send it MY way! ;-)
I just love looking at your appliqué. Almost makes me want to do it!!!

  14. I like how you modify the patterns to fit the fabric. It just makes sense to take advantage of great fabrics. LOVE the cactus block so much! And yes, I always cut out the backs of my applique if it's large enough or I'm not worried about a pieced area coming undone. Makes it so much easier to hand quilt later!

  15. I do so love these blocks and all the ways you creatively use fabric to make them. They are so perfect! I had to look for a minute to see the difference in the two fabrics - black dots vs. blue dots. I think I would have changed it, too. I cut out the backs of my applique pieces though I occasionally regret it when I want to change a fabric or shape.

  16. I can't see a difference in the binding fabric from the background of the block. Seeing your cactus makes me want to re-do mine with different fabrics.

  17. Wonderful blocks as usual! I don't know if I'd re-do that binding mistake :) Love the cactus block and of course all the fabrics you are using. I get the 4:00 a.m. thing--though 4:30-4:45 is more my time!
