Inspiration and Interpretation

I love learning what makes other quilters “tick”. Where does that creative inspiration come from?

I want to share just one example. Audrey of Quilty Folk posted her amazing quilt “Sunburst” today (here). Isn’t it fantastic? I marvel at her choice of colors and her creativity.
Here is what amazes me…This is the quilt that inspired her.

In 2006, I made a quilt (”Pennsylvania Palette” ) using this same quilt as inspiration.

I had seen a photo on an auction site and I fell in love. Years later I found out that Ann Hermes purchased the quilt and Dawn of Collector with a Needle made the pattern shown above called “Calico Paradise”. I ordered it immediately. I must say that Dawn does a fantastic job with her patterns and I highly recommend getting one for yourself. You can order it (here). Even if you never plan to make it, the pattern is so lovely it is worth owning!

So you see how two people can come up with two such different quilts based on the same inspiration. What makes you tick? What gets your creative juices flowing?

  1. So glad you posted your interpretation too. I love both of them. Audrey took the elements and let them do their own thing and you did the same thing gently nudging the quilt to resemble a first cousin, but an individual just the same. Your quilting is awesome!

  3. Two very different quilts yet the inspiration quilt peeks through in both yours and Audrey's. Wouldn't it be fun to see all three in person next to each other. All beautiful!

  4. Both quilts are quite wonderful! Petting and fondling my piles of fabrics really stimulates my creative urges even when I may not have enough energy left over to do anything about it.

  8. How very different but similar your quilt and Audrey's is. I don't know that what I wrote makes sense to anyone but me. Both beautiful. Audrey has such a creative mind when it comes to taking what is in her head and putting it down in fabric.

  9. Your quilt is awesome...this appliqué and this quilting ...wow ! I'm going to see Audrey's blog after.
To answer to your question, I think a large piece of fabric can inspire me. This is the case at this moment ! I have bought one yard of fabric in Paducah last year and I created a quilt with it ! I'm working on it this week and I hope to show you in a post in a few weeks !!
